Pain medicine, also known as pain management or pain medicine, is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of various types of pain, including acute and chronic pain conditions.
Interventional Pain management is a highly specialized branch and is a super-specilaity in some countries like India.
To become a pain medicine specialist, you typically need to complete a medical degree (MD or DO or MBBS) and then pursue specialized training in pain medicine. This training often involves completing a residency in anesthesiology, neurology, or physical medicine and rehabilitation, followed by a fellowship in pain medicine. Other Specialities which are allowed in some countries are Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery.
For PG Diploma in Pain Medicine: MBBS is the minimum qualification requirement.
For all other Fellowships:

Training in pain medicine typically involves a combination of didactic learning, clinical rotations, and hands-on experience. During your training, you will learn about pain assessment, pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management techniques, interventional procedures, rehabilitation approaches, and patient care coordination.

The length of training to become a pain medicine specialist varies depending on the country and the specific training pathway. In the United States, it typically takes around 4 years of medical school, followed by 4 years of residency training in anesthesiology, neurology, or physical medicine and rehabilitation, and then an additional 1-2 years of fellowship training in pain medicine.
In India, after MD/DA Anesthesiology, you can apply for
1. 2 years full residency program of National Board
2. 1 year of PDCC in some universities
3. 3 years of DM in Pain Medicine.
4. You can also apply for Fellowship of Indian Academy of Pain Medicine directly, if you have 5 years of ISSP Membership and Experience of pain Practice.
Pain medicine specialists treat a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to chronic back pain, neuropathic pain, cancer pain, musculoskeletal pain, postoperative pain, and pain associated with conditions like fibromyalgia and arthritis.
Pain medicine specialists use a multidisciplinary approach to pain management, which may include medication management, MIPSI procedures( Minimally Invasive Pain and Spine Interventions) such as Percutaneous disc decopmression, Endoscopic Spine Procedures, Vertebral Augmentation procedures, Nerve root interventions, Joint Interventions, regenerative Interventions.
Yes, there are subspecialties within pain medicine. Some examples include interventional pain management, pediatric pain management, cancer pain management, and palliative care. These subspecialties require additional training and expertise beyond general pain medicine.
